AVID Camp

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Are the boys cabins and girls cabins separate from each other?
- YES, the boys and girls are separated at night on opposite sides of the camp and they are under 24 hr supervision from their camp teachers.  No need to worry about them going out at night - at all.  It's never happened, and I expect that it never will.

2. What are the camp teachers like?
- The camp teachers are trained, college-educated professionals.  The science camp staff all have college degrees, usually in a scientific field, and not merely camp counselors, but trained teachers.  Your kids will be taught by outdoor education teachers.

3. What about the general safety of my child?
- The kids will be supervised 24 hours a day.  They will be with the teachers for class, when they eat, and the teachers bunk with the students as well at nighttime.

4. What happens if a medical emergency occurs?
- Pali Institute has a 24 hour a day Registered Nurse on site through our entire visit.  If something does happen, Running Springs Fire Department is approximately 6 minutes away and has ambulance service.  I have worked with these fire personnel for over 3 years as I am also a firefighter for one of the mountain divisions.

If your child is sick or takes a recurring medicine, the nurse will take possession of the medicine when we arrive and make sure the child takes their medicine at the correct time.  If a student has allergies or any other special needs, the camp medical team will make accommodations.

The phone number to the camp is: (909) 867-5743

5. What if I need to get ahold of my child in the event of the emergency?
- If there is an emergency, you would call the camp phone number and we would locate your child, get them packed, and have them ready for you before you even arrive.  Emergencies do happen, and the camp staff is very flexible in dealing with this unfortunate time.

The phone number to the camp is: (909) 867-5743

6. What is the food like?
- The food ends up being everyone's favorite thing about this experience.  Although we have fun, learn science in the outdoors, and make new friends, the FOOD is what everyone always talks about.  Here is just a sample menu of one of our previous trips: Click Here.  If your child needs a vegetarian menu, or special menu, the camp is more than happy to make accommodations.  As we get closer to the trip, we will handle all special food arrangements.

7. What are the classes the students will be taking this year?
- This year, our AVID Ambassadors will be taking Leadership classes to learn the skills of being a good leader and how to work with peers in a leadership roll.

8. What should we pack in terms of items and clothing?
- As we get closer to the science camp trip dates, we'll be having meetings at school and I'll go through all of this with the kids.  If you'd like to see the recommended packing list: Click Here.  We are scheduled for a 4-day trip. One important note: There are no electronics necessary during this trip.  Please keep all cell phones, mp3 players, iPods, etc AT HOME. There is no need for a camera as well.

**I will be taking approximately 400 pictures in the course of the 4 days and each night I will upload the photos of the day so the parents can see what their kids are doing and how much fun they're having.**

9. What if I'd like to know more about the camp?
- Please Click Here to visit the website for Pali Institute if you'd like to read up on what the camp experience is like for the kids.

10. What happens if after reading all of this, I still have questions or just want to talk with you?

- Please call me and I will be happy to talk with you and put your mind at ease.  This will be an experience they remember for the rest of their lives.  The kids will get to do things during this camp not available during the school setting so I encourage you to send your kids to camp with me.
